The Black Forest, Germany
Off the beaten path, we went and headed east to Germany to celebrate Chris' Opa's 90th Birthday. It is amazing to see both Chris' Opa and Oma still living at age 90 and 86. To this day Opa works on the farm daily. One day we went to the farm for homemade pizza, and Opa was nowhere to be seen as he has to be the last one working every day. Opa showed up for pizza in his wife beater shirt relaxed after a hard days work.
Interestingly enough the farm was built over 50 years ago. Oma and Opa now live in the basement, Chris' aunt and uncle live on the main floor, and his cousin and his girlfriend live upstairs. The farm used to house cows, chickens and pigs. Now there are only cows. Today the farm is more modern with an energy focus of producing electricity through mixing the cow's manure with grass, hay, etc. generates energy during the decomposition process. The farm sells power to the grid as well as fully powers five other homes in the village and the farm.
The Black Forest Hotel which held the 90th Birthday celebration oddly enough was the same location where Roger (Chris' dad) and Sigrid (Chris' mom) met up with each other for the first time in Germany. Later on, discovering that Roger showed up sick to Germany infected with hepatitis. Hepatitis put both of Chris' parents in hospital quarantined in England. The location of Rogers remaining ashes got spread at the family farm given Roger's love for Sigrid.
We got snow in Germany, unexpectedly. Our suitcases were not equipped for this, but we made it work. It felt a bit like home. Despite the snow, Chris went to an adventure park with his aunt, uncle and cousins. At the park, Jada watched the daily feeding of the lions and tigers. While watching the monkey's, they got out of their cage and ate the kid' apples. To this day, Jada is still mad at the monkeys for taking her apple.
As for Cruz, our tag-along child. Cruz being a five month old is a walk in the park compared to our wild and naughty 2.5-year-old toddler. He is a happy baby that smiles at any new face. Unfortunately, the kids still have colds (going into three weeks now), and poor Cruz has been puking during the night. We believe it is because the mucus is going into his stomach and upsetting it. I guess this is just our new reality with two kids and the older kid touching everything in site.
I digressed a bit there.
Overall our trip to Germany was great, and we enjoyed visiting with all the family and introducing our kids to them everyone especially Oma and Opa.
XOXO
Nicole + Chris
