Foodies in Nice, France
Nice was beautiful with stunning sunsets, a long walking path along the ocean front with a rocky beach that created bright blue water on the shore. The playground in the city centre was longer than a football field with a variety of playgrounds. Not to mention the largest water park we have ever seen, a merry go round and all. Jada loved this area for obvious reasons! Poor Jada has been trying to make friends at the parks, but the kids look at her with a blank stare because she isn't speaking a lick of there language. We decided to explain this to Jada but how is a 2.5-year old suppose to understand that the world is full of people speaking all sorts of languages.
Chris and I picked all of our locations through Airbnb. Considering we didn't know anything about all of the cities and we are not much of researchers, we would find our places to stay based on Google mapping them to the closest Starbucks. We found our condo in Nice just like this.
Right off of the get-go, we felt that the condo we booked was not right. The taxi driver dropped us off next to train tracks, and he wouldn't accept Chris' credit card. We stood on the street next to the train tracks with all of the luggage and the two kids waiting for Chris to run and pull out cash to pay for the taxi. In the Airbnb condo, there were two bathrooms, one had only a shower and sink in it, and the other just had a mini sink and a toilet. Think about this... when you get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you have to walk across the unit, through the kitchen to get to the washroom. Ok, maybe too much info, but you get the jist - it was strange. We ended up getting out of this condo and moving to a much more excellent condo overlooking the marina.
We are major foodie's who judge our travel locations on the food and vibrancy not on the history. Sorry to say this for all the history buffs. With that said we felt this city did not meet our food expectations for a few reasons. First off, only every second store was open it was an empty feeling unless you were right in the city centre with the tourist. It possibly could have been because of the time of the year. We are not sure.
A big breakfast that includes eggs and or at least some form of a protein is what we desire. A croissant and coffee is a standard breakfast for the French and what seems standard throughout Europe. On Sundays, they have big brunches. One morning we had a fantastic four-course breakfast including a dessert one day. Secondly, ordering or even asking for takeaway food was a no-no in France, they do not believe in takeaway food, barely for a coffee. Chris would have to bribe them to do this for us, and if they did, they would provide the food for us on their restaurant plates, and we would have to return them, or we would have tin-foil covering the containers because they didn't even have takeaway boxes. One time he also got hung up on.
A nice hot latte made out of any other milk then cows milk Chris, and I favourite thing to get every day. A latte wasn't possible to get unless we went to Starbucks and paid double the price what we would pay back home in Canada. Not to mention the size of there drinks made us laugh. One day Chris went to try something different and ended up with this below. I was laughing so hard watching Chris take his whopping two sips before it was empty. Below is my cup vs Chris'.
Well, we didn't just eat and look for food, one day we hopped onto a cute tourist train to go up the hill to check out Castle Hill and some stunning views of the entire city. We also spent a day each in both Cannes and Monaco and loved each of these locations. If we came back, we would stay in either Cannes or Monaco while making a train day trip Nice.
Since the Nice truck attack in 2016, they have amped up their security. On trains, buses, walking paths, you name it. The military, police and security guards would be walking around with guns. Maybe possibly thought this would make the residents and tourists feel safer, but we felt the complete opposite about it. At the airport we were waiting in line to check in for our flight to Zurich when all of a sudden a guy was yelling something in French, it was that we all had to evacuate the airport and walk to the back of the parking lot. We stood outside for 30 minutes before going back in. Luckily we didn't miss our flight.
The kids being sick has continued. Coughing throughout the night has become the new norm. We are getting less sleep at night then when Cruz was first born.
Looking forward to heading to Germany in hopes of more rest coming our way.
