Family Flight to New Zealand
Started off with a good start, got to the airport early and everyone was in good spirits. The first leg of the flight was Calgary to Vancouver, a 1-hour trip before the big plane ride to NZ.
If you have been following my blog and most of you know I have a puke phobia (it is called emetophilia) when I am on airplanes it's already amplified, and I scout out anyone who appears not feeling well. On our first leg of the flight to Vancouver, the row next to us had a teenager boy with two empty seats next to him. Halfway through the trip I looked over, and the teenager boy was puking in the puke bag, I was holding Cruz trying to plug my ears hiding under my pillow in horror. Thank god our flight was only 1- hour long.
We had a few hours before our next flight. In looking around at the boarding area, there were a few families, pwff. The trip from Vancouver to New Zealand is 14 hours. Flying with Air New Zealand had an option called Sky Couches where you pay for an extra seat and make a mini bed over one row of three seats. It ended up being Cruz, Jada and myself on the Sky Couch. Chris then sat across from us in the aisle. Jada was comfy as she had tons of room. Cruz, on the other hand, had trouble as he has gotten used to sleeping on his own but ended up having to rely on sleeping in our arms to fall asleep. Every time Jada woke up, someone moved, and any noise would wake Cruz up. Chris spent a lot of time walking Cruz back and forth down the aisles. I think I slept a total of 1 hour broken up throughout the flight and Chris probably walked Cruz down the aisle a total of 3 hours in the 14-hour flight. Not ideal.
On the flight, In the morning the lights all turned on, and breakfast started getting served. Knowing my luck, the young boy starts throwing up directly behind me. Really, what are the chances? I then got up strapped Cruz on me in the carrier and stood at the back of the airplane for the last hour or so of the plane ride. It turns out his younger brother started also throwing up. Ugg. I was thinking in my head. Please don't give my kids the flu.
Chris and I always rate our flights with our kids, this flight only got me a 4/10 (two lower point for all the puking) it was a 6/10 for Chris. Wish us luck for our next nine flights left on this trip.
